It doesn't have a really massive impact on the visuals, since I doubt you'd be busy checking out the shadow a Mancubus instead of glory killing it. As far as I can tell, the resolution only increases between Low and Ultra, with Nightmare and Ultra Nightmare simply increasing the draw distance of dynamic shadows. Visual Impact: This option controls the resolution of the game's shadow maps. On a scale of 1 to 10, the performance impact here is a 2/10. Below are the VRAM requirements of setting. Performance Impact: The performance impact isn't very high, but that's to be expected since it's just textures. It's worth noting that if you choose to use DLSS/FSR or Ray Tracing, you'll have to turn this down to compensate for the increased VRAM usage (unless you have a higher end GPU, that is). It's not too important visually or in terms of performance, but I'd take it as high as it can go. Visual Impact: This option controls how many high resolution textures can be loaded and cached at a time. Graphics: NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2080 Ti (11GB) or AMD Radeon VII (16GB) Processor: Intel Core i9-9900K or better, or AMD Ryzen 7 3700X or better ULTRA NIGHTMARE REQUIREMENTS (4K60fps or 1440p120fps on the Ultra Nightmare Preset) Note: On the GTX 970, the High Preset will not run unless Texture Pool Size is set to Medium due to VRAM constraints. Graphics: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1060 (6GB), GTX 970 (4GB), AMD RX 480 (8GB) Processor: Intel Core i7-6700K or better, or AMD Ryzen 7 1800X or better RECOMMENDED REQUIREMENTS (1080p60fps on the High Preset) Processor: Intel Core i5 3.3 GHz or better, or AMD Ryzen 3 3.1 GHz or better MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS (1080p60fps on the Low Preset) What's more impressive about the optimization still is that the High preset surpasses Doom '16 maxed out, and it isn't even the max settings. For reference, I have a build that's nearly identical to the Recommended Requirements (I have more RAM) but I can run the game at High or Ultra without any problems. I've included the System Requirements provided by the developers below, and although they're pretty steep, you can get away with pushing your system past what they think you can run.
